free agency is gonna be crazy since there is only like a month for everyone to sign and start training camp. the kings are gonna have money to spend and even tho there arent any superstar players there are some that i wouldnt mind the kings signing.
1. Nene - he's probably the best free agent out there. he can be up 16 and 8 and be a good frontcourt partner with cousins. we need to solid front court to compete with the best of the west.
2. Jeff Green - he would slot in perfectly at the small forward and he plays on both ends of the floor. only thing is that he's a restricted free agent and im sure the celtics didn't trade away perkins to let this guy walk.
3. Marc Gasol - young, refined offensively, can rebound and block....the whole package and probably gonna be impossible to sign since the grizzlies are gonna try to retain him no matter what.
4. Aaron Afflalo - another restricted free agent that would be hard to pry away from his team. he plays solid defense and can contribute on the offensive end with his improved shooting. a perfect guard to play along with tyreke in the backcourt.
5. David West - a solid 20 and 10 guy who is highly underrated. the only thing is he's coming off and injury and getting into his 30s which means that a production decline is on the horizon.
those are the free agents out there that interest me, but there are also a couple of players that will hit the trade block that could be extremely desirable: chris paul, monta ellis, and josh smith
I like all of those too - though West is a little scary, especially given the paycheck he'll be getting. Really like Affalo though I'd assume he'd be matched, same with Gasol.

Marcus Thornton is the #1 priority

Could get Samuel back as well, with the maxxed out teams maybe looking at trimming payroll

Marcus Thornton is the #1 priority
thornton is a one-trick pony. yes he can score 20 points on a given night but he'll also allow the opposing player to score at least that. over a 48 minute game he is contributes a -6.9 +/-. i'm not opposed to bringing him back at a reasonable price but he definitely shouldn't be the priority especially if other teams foolishly give him a lucrative offer sheet.
Thornton did have a good simple rating though - http://www.82games.com/1011/1011SAC.HTM
I think the sped up free agent market is going to cause some weirdness, I just don't know if that'll be good or bad weirdness. Plus, I wonder if teams will be reluctant to spend given the new CBA and the short time frame.

Agree. I also thought his defense and ball handling (driving) were better than that of just a catch-and-shoot player.

the guy can shoot....and that isn't something I take lightly
If only Thornton were about 6'8 or 6'9. But no, we're stuck with Salmons :sigh:

Thorton is a priority!! The guy can score out of this world. I think we actually have a really good team if we can gell together. Glad this lockout is over great news heading into my bday tom =] Tyreke just signed over seas too lol. Out that FA list i want Gasol. Him and Cousin on the FC would be beastly

1. I like Nene better than Dal. Would gladly take
2. NOOO. He's a tweener play. He doesn't shoot well enough to be a 3 and too weak to be a 4. He is like Carl landry without the physical edge.
3. Ditto as #1.
4. Denver will likely match any credible deal for him unfortunately since half their team is going to be in China. Right now with the glut of guards this team has, its a chance for the the to find out what Thorton/Tyreke/Jimmer can do in the shortened season.
5. I like West too, very solid on the offensive end, but would want more years and money than he is worth.

Call me crazy....but with Salmons and Hickson the Kings are looking pretty solid this year.
I would sign Thornton for sure
and then you have to make a decision if you start going after Nene or Gasol...
Thompson would have to go....and he might even be on his way out anyway
I'd rather they sign Thornton and Dally, then maybe go after a solid vet like Crawford
I think the Kings, talent wise, have a good amount - question the fit though of some. Really don't think Salmons will fit well with both Evans and Thornton (not to mention Cousins). Just too many guys who want the ball in their hands, especially given that both Cousins and Evans need the ball to be effective.
I think Salmons COULD be effective if he played off screens and played spot up with Marcus Thornton, but, I don't think he has the desire and will to do so.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets are preparing to go "all out" to sign Nene.

Salmons is weird....he has good years followed by bad years. I look for a good year from him
and his defense is awesome. That's why I like Dally on the court as well
rebounding and defense are the place to start
Yeah, I'm not sure how it'll click on the court, but on paper the Kings are pretty solid defensively. Evans is a good defender as is Salmons and Dally (if he returns). JT's not bad either, he just plays dumb.
Cousins and Thornton have some work to do on defense though, especially Cousins.

Greg Oden? Very very risky yes but a big man rotation of Cousins/Hickson/Thompson/Oden is very young and has a good balance of scoring and defense.
And I really like David West too, with what he brings. He could also teach Hickson a thing or 2, they are very similar type size and play types.

Caron Butler too.
I think Thornton is almost guaranteed to sign with the kings now
I think he'll sign a pretty friendly deal too, given the circumstances. I don't see any team really throwing a big wad of cash at him thanks to the sped up free agent process and the fact that he's restricted.

I'd guess a four year deal.

I'd guess a four year deal.
I hope so. But there's still some uncertainty as what exactly the ownership and GM will do, IMO.
Thornton is most certainly a question mark - I think a safe one, but, it's a risk to commit 30 million dollars over 4 or 5 years to a player who played well in less than 30 games while your star player wasn't on the floor. There's no doubt about it. Could work (should work), but it could become Beno part II as well.

reminds me of kevin martin. can shoot lights out but can't defend worth shit. the only difference is he wasn't injured every other game for us like martin was

Agree, a fairly common practice. C.J. Miles got a 4 year deal a few years ago, having a stint almost as good as Thornton. And so far, I think it looks like a good deal for both sides.

Thornton is a better defender, and has better ball handling.
Martin (career):
DRTG: 111
AST %: 10.9
Thornton (2010-2011):
DRTG: 108
AST % (15.3% in SAC, 13.2% for season).
AST % isn't the ultimate way to measure ball handling, but it's a start, and it shows he can make plays for others.
Ranking guards 6'4 to 6'7 by assist %:

Thornton and Martin actually end up right next to each other, 16th and 17th.
But IMO, Martin can only drive and get fouled, or drive all the way to the rim. He doesn't have a midrange game.
Thornton has a little bit of a midrange game, and can also draw some fouls, and can make a few plays for others.

Thornton is a better asset than Martin

Help me out here, so with the new CBA do the Kings have to spend at least 85% of the cap? If so they will have to make a play in the free agent market and of the mentioned Id throw that mony at Gasol. Dalembert should be gone, and it still might be a bit crowded up front with Cousins, JT, Hickson, and even Whiteside, however Gasol in the mix with anyone of these guys is respectable.
Memphis came out today and said they'd match ANY contract offer for Gasol. Obviously, that most likely only means something thats financially reasonable, but, I think he's slowly dwindling away out of King fan hopes.

That makes sense. I recon we still have some talent up front but lack some maturity. Thornton should be resigned and I would have liked to go after Prince but now have Salmons. Outside of that not sure what FA goes well with this team.

I hat ethe addition of ballhog Salmons. This team alrdy has some scorers n shooters on it with the addition of Jimmer. Tyreke needs the ball and Jimmer and Thorton need to play off it. Tyreke penetrates to the lane and dishes out to open Thorton or Jimmer, or Cousins all day. Salmons doesnt pass and requires alot of touches. Hes actually gonna hurt this team.

Yeah hard to believe Westphal was that keen on Salmons. A 6'6" SF that already had a chanch in Sacramento. This management is doing a fine job of keeping the Kings mared in mediocrecy.

they do have an amnesty clause this year
That contract is so shitty too - 8 million for four more seasons (though the 4th year is only a partial guarantee)? Gag me.
I wonder if the Kings will hold onto to their amnesty clause though - it's good for the entire CBA and given the need to stay in a particular salary zone, sad as it is, they need Salmons money until they re-sign Reke or bring in some big talent.

Salmons brings stability to the 3 spot and plays good defense there, I doubt he's going anywhere.

I feel the same way....and it's up to Westphal to put it all together
I don't think he, Evans, Cousins, and Thornton can share the ball enough to be successful. They all need it, Thornton to a lesser effect, to be effective - but Evans and Cousins need is especially.
Too many guys who are unable to play off the ball on the court all at the same time.
Same can be said for Hickson too. Lots of guys that want to hold the ball and score.
