Pick the winner of each series, and the series score.
1 point for series winner, 1 point for correct series score.
1 point for each series MVP.
1 Bonus point for a correct team winner in a game-by-game breakdown.
Road Team vs. Home Team
2-3-2 format, St. Louis has Home Field for the series.
Game 1: C.J. Wilson vs. Chris Carpenter
Game 2: Colby Lewis vs. Jamie Garcia
Game 3: Edwin Jackson vs. Derek Holland
Game 4: Kyle Lohse vs. Matt Harrison
Game 5: ?? vs. ??
Game 6: ?? vs. ??
Game 7: ?? vs. ??

STL wins in 6 games :)
STL wins game 1 (Carpenter can be dominating in the playoffs, STL's offense will berate CJ Wilson).
TEX wins game 2 (Toss-up game. Garcia just hasn't shown the ability to be reliable in the postseason. Texas has too much power for him to rely on weak groundball outs.
STL wins game 3 (I can see this being a high-scoring 'shooutout'.)
TEX wins game 4 (Since they're at home again, I can't see them losing back-to-back home games. Harrison has been steady, and a good choice for a #4 pitcher, Lohse will probably pitch 3 innings lol).
STL wins games 5,6 (STL runs away with the series, just like they did with MIL. Superior SP, a bullpen that's been revamped with a new closer, and an offense that scored 10+ runs three times during the LCS. I'm not too impressed with TEX pitching. I don't see one 'lockdown' starter. Lewis, Wilson, Harrison, even Holland can all have decent games, but I don't see it happening on a consistent basis (back-to-back games). Also, given the momentum that STL's lineup has, plus the good health, and the home field advantage, it'll be too much IMO).
More people might be comfortable picking TEX because they were more or less a playoff lock since July, while STL sneaked in at the last second, but STL has impressed me more, and I always taught, from a talent standpoint, they could compete with any team. They're finally living up to that.
Series MVP: Hmm...it's a tough choice. STL has a couple of oddball candidates (guys like Freese or Craig or Jon Jay). I think Berkman could have a breakout series, and he could play like he did during the first month of the year. I don't want to pick Pujols, but I don't want to pick one of those role players either, so I'll go with Berkman.

well...as a life long A's fan, my sentimental pick would be the Cardinal's
...but
I see the Rangers taking it in 6 games
either way, I like both teams

Thanks. And your MVP?
Are you sentimental because of Tony La Russa?

Normally I'd pick a full seven game series between these teams. I used to pick a lot of seven game series in the NBA.
But I think this is going to be one of those series that's shorter than it should be. I think Texas has a deeper lineup. Both SP rotations may have trouble in this series, but I'll give the edge to Texas bullpen. St. Louis bullpen has been great since August though, I think the broadcasters said they finished with a 2.97 ERA since the beginning of August.
I think this is only going to be a 4 or 5 game series.
And AL teams tend to sweep a lot more often than NL sweeps.
AL Sweeps:
* 2007, Boston over Colorado
* 2005, Chicago White Sox over Houston
* 2004, Boston over St. Louis
* 1999, New York Yankees over Atlanta
* 1998, New York Yankees over San Diego
* 1989, Oakland over San Francisco
* 1966, Baltimore over L.A. Dodgers
NL Sweeps:
* 1990, Cincinnati over Oakland
* 1976, Cincinnati over New York Yankees
* 1963, L.A. Dodgers over New York Yankees
* 1954, New York Giants over Cleveland Indians
So you can see, in the last 57 years, 7 AL teams have done it, while only 4 NL teams have done it.
Carpenter is good, but he just doesn't have consecutive great starts anymore. There's a reason I dropped him from my fantasy team in mid May, and the MBs were blowing up about why he was only getting about the minimum in quality starts. He's going to have trouble with this Texas lineup.
And yeah, however long this series goes, I'd be surprised if more than one game had an Under of 5.5 runs.
Both Texas and St. Louis have been neck and neck in bullpen ERA and WHIP.

It's not that I'm picking Texas because they've been a playoffs lock for a while, while St. Louis needed the last day to get in. St. Louis has had a better offseason in the postseason. And their SPs have more strikeout material then Texas' SPs do. I just think we're going to look back at this series, with expectations of a 6 or 7 game series, and wonder why it was so short, and feel robbed. Just one of those quirky series that doesn't feel like it went as long as it should have. (I feel that way about Tampa Bay and Philly in 2008, for example).
For all we know, St. Louis could be the one with the sweep. They are great in a lot of things too. So maybe it's more about me picking a short series, regardless of the winner, than a long one.
Hey can someone make a BOLD PREDICTION about how many strikeouts we'll see from each team?
We probably have two of the best offensive catchers, in Napoli and Yadier Molina.
I think Texas needs to use a cheat code and get Cliff Lee to start in place of Derek Holland. :heehee:
So I'll be BOLD and take the sweep.
Texas in 4. Texas wins 1, 2, 3, 4.
MVP: Adrian Beltre

I think I saw a stat that stated that no TEX SP has pitched into the 7th inning this postseason. I can believe that.
I can't trust their bullpen either, and Feliz can blow up in tense situations.
On paper, the two might be even regarding pitching, but STL has more talent and I hope it shows. TEX offense might be slightly better, but I thought NYY offense was slightly better than DET, and they still lost.
